Good point.  I'm pretty sure the native languages of Canada fall into the Inuit group.

I'm not racist against East Asians or anything. It's just that I immigrated from India primarily because I wanted to live in an English-speaking country and boom...I encounter quite a few people speaking Chinese.

I know people in Quebec speak French as well but who cares - I'm in Ontario. And I speak to other Indians in English, just fyi.

Not the point. If you mean that then that is not how you should think of others from another country, ANY COUNTRY.

My x wife is Japanese, she came over to America the same time as her best friend together. My X picked up English very quickly and spoke very well. Her friend who understood English spoke very broken English, but of course they are going to mostly speak in the language they were raised with. My point is I think you are assuming too much and have a bad sample rate. I don't think those you are talking about are always deliberately keeping to themselves. 

Treat others as individuals don't assume why a person does something.

Oh, you're Indian? Have you abandoned your cultural background -or- do you eat Indian food, socialize with other Indians, go to Indian cultural celebrations, speak your native language to family members, heck, ever watched a Bollywood movie? 

I reckon you've done most of the latter, yet you can't abide accidentally hearing "East Asians" speaking to each other privately in a non-English language.

This says more about you than the East Asians.

Just the opposite! I fit into Canadian society far better than into Indian society. That's why Tres Leches' post seemed ridiculous to me.

It's likely that any two east asian second gens you see speaking asian at each other do as well.  Being second gen, I bet they speak english without a distinct accent or dialectic tic, too. Long enough to have lost the mother tongues limitations..not long enough to pick up the regionals.

I live in Saudi Arabia. There are literally Millions of Indians and Pakistanies here, in my 25 years of life, I didn't meet but a single one who can speak Arabic probably with a Saudi accent.

Heck; some of them have been in this country for 10 or 20 years even.
So let's look at the scenarios of the Asian guys here:

1-They were born in Canada -both of them-; but they're speaking about a domestic event
2-One was born in Beijing, Japan (the video below 0:54):





And the other was born in Canada. So the Canadian-born wanted to communicate with the Japanese born, so he used the native Japanese he learned from his grandmother.

3-Non was born in Canada, but they didn't have an inferiority complex regarding their native language; so they use it in western societies without shame. You don't have to claim you're a native when you're an immigrant. Everybody know about it, from the queen of of England to hounds of hell. Your skin tells who you are, and all races are so beautiful in their own way.
The only integration problem, is between THE HUMANS who have an inferiority complex in other societies.

Speaking as an Inuit  Inuktitut is one of 60 native languages spoken in Canada . The idea of language integration into French or English is just silly.Canada has always had multiple languages. Even among Europeans.There are ‎150,000 Ukrainians who still speak it fluently at home. German is everywhere. Gaelic has been spoken in Newfoundland since the 16th century. And Chinese has been a part of Canada since 18th century .
