I find the social worker aspect extremely intriguing. This may be strange to ask but were you already an atheist when you started? I have a cop friend who was Catholic until he became a detective and now he said he can't believe a god worth following would put people through stuff he has seen them go through. I'm not sure my paramedic husband won't follow that same path. I feel like it's in the line of work of helping people.

Actually, I started working in this setting around the same time I abandoned my faith. I don’t think it had much to do with it, though. My realization was more logical than emotional. Sure, once I lacked the belief I became emotionally affected, but I didn’t lack the faith due to emotions, if that makes sense.
