Maybe the Pope said it to try to make everyone happy. Those who are against the idea of hell will like him more, and he has plausible deniability for those who want to believe that the Pope still believes in hell. Maybe that's why he chose to say it in an interview that was not being recorded.
More plausibly, he was misrepresented and/or quoted out of context.

Maybe, but why would the Vatican then need to lie about an interview even taking place? Why not just tell us what the Pope really said or meant to say? I don't think the interviewer accidentally misrepresented what the Pope said. I think that either the interviewer is telling the truth, or he's just plain making things up to slander the Pope on purpose.

It takes a pope saying it to make us believe that?

Well, in all fairness, the journalist's technique was somewhat irresponsible. Not taking notes or anything, and then paraphrasing the Pope on the matter leaves us without a reliable account of just what the Pope did say. That's probably fine for uncontroversial stuff, but claims like this one require considerably more backing.

Francis talks out of "both ends"; it's a way to placate liberals and conservatives, in order to maximize revenue and influence. His modality is the classic Marxian dialectic (or, "diuretic", depending on one's POV!)

Which isn't such a bad thing in my opinion.

Not to Us, but for the naive believers, they are being misled and deceived out of their hard-earned monies.
