It seems Darwin was not aware of Mendel's work.

That is quite the historical oddity. Nobody is quite sure why it is that they never connected the dots between both theories. In hindsight, it seems obvious to us now, but somehow both of them missed it at the time. Darwin is known to have read Focke's work which copiously referenced Mendel, and Mendel owned and read Origin, so they were aware of each other. Yet, still didn't make the connection. Why? Nobody knows.
