Is religion child abuse?

RE: Is religion child abuse?
No-one can say 'Religion is such-and-such' as a generalisation, unless 'such-and-such' is 'a load of bollocks'. Religion is a massively diverse phenomenon, and in some cases it's probably abusive, whereas in many cases it's not.
'We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.' H.L. Mencken

'False religion' is the ultimate tautology.

'It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.' Mark Twain

'I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.' Abraham Lincoln

In reality society sees a very fine line between bringing up children and indoctrination. I am inclined to say that raising children in a particular religion is indoctrination regardless of the parents intentions.

As a Liberal Democrat when it comes to political philosophy, unless society and their elected representatives deems particular children are being indoctrinated. I cant support banning parents from raising their children in a religious faith. However I agree with Daniel Dennett's proposal for education in different religions for children in the school system from Kindergarten to High School.

Well, here's two shitheads who are facing jail for murdering their kid with "prayer."

Quote:PHILADELPHIA, PA – Friday, Herbert and Catherine Schaible were convicted on involuntary manslaughter charges for the death of their 2-year-old son, Kent. In January of 2009, Kent died of bacterial pneumonia which is easily treatable with antibiotics. But instead of taking him to the doctor, his parents prayed for him.

And not in Arkansas or Mississippi, either.

I see it as abusive. Telling kids they have to behave or they will forever be tortured in hell will warp their outlook on life and thinking. so you basically torturing their minds into submission which is child abuse.
