From what I can tell (not having read the paper) and from what I expect, they are writing up observations and doing statistical analysis on it.

It's hypotheses that are meant to be falsifiable. They aren't putting forward a hypothesis.

Accuracy in identification or interpretation is not the purpose of this initial study. That will happen with repeated studies and reviews. You really don't do science much do you.

Slightly embarrassed that I posted the wrong paper but it was 2018 so suggests that it was part of the same study.
