-just as I was prepping a big screed about how we can draw a parallel from the symbolic elements of the story to their actual basis in a real history....the thread goes full benatar. 
(the whole golden cow thing did happen, in a manner of speaking, right down to the bloody massacre)

LOL..okay.
So, back to those nasty motherfuckers I was mentioning. The levites were a minority group who worshiped the god yahweh. They were also a brutal and particularly bloodthirsty set of people. Their compatriot canaanites worshiped El. This was a problem and a solution (because it could be used as pretext). They were said to have slaughtered other tribes for their many disagreements..until such a time as they came to power, asserted that their god was the real god and no one could call god all those other names anymore..in addition to establishing a tax and tithing system along with exclusive rights to educate children in their "history". They also appear to have had a fetish for egyptian cultural and religious bric-a-brac.

To be more serious now, presently we can more accurately understand the function of the bible. It always has and always will boil down to language. In the past, language received a pass due to population illiteracy. When literacy became a more common reality, those who wanted to promote religion had to evolve through apologetic arguments. One would assume that would have been the end of the religious movement, yet people are constantly and irrationally seeking comfort from unrealistic elements. In the end, what we have arrived at for the present are people so void of reason that a silly mythology makes more sense than reality. Sad, truly sad.
Though I doubt it takes a language expert to know that biblical claims are just those. Claims. There is no historical significance. There is mere mythology attempting to survive during an age of ever increasing reason.
