I think that is the two options put forth. I suppose the phrasing of being educated just struck me, as perhaps they where suggesting there where groups of people out there, who don’t understand the pluses conventions concerning the appended “s”. I found it kinda funny.
However I could see myself doing such a think on purpose. I find it humorous when people get really worked up over such a thing. When I lived in Indiana, I almost always pronounced the “s” on the end of Illinois.
People who enjoy doing things to get people worked up are known as 'assholes' or 'dicks' in real life, and 'trolls' on the internet.
I've noticed evangelical preachers speaking the same way. The aaatheist! The gayuh! The liberulll!

A typo is when you know the correct way to spell something but occasionally make a 'finger mistake'. If you do it most the time with a particular word, you may just not be clear on how to do it right, or may be doing it on purpose. There comes a point where it's more insulting to assume that the person is actually that bad of a typist.

I'm actually the opposite. I don't even recall seening a Christian even use the word Atheist except on this site. The people I know in person and on Facebook either don't acknowledge us as a group or they call us anti Christian. Then again I am the minority here so they don't really need to use the plural form.

So similar to saying “gawd”, “jeebus”, and adding “tards” as a suffix to everyone you don’t agree with. Or does that expand it not its own special category of assholishness? Just curious?
Also, what you think you hear, seems different than typing it out.

Atheist is a noun. Like most nouns you put an s at the end to signify plural. Are they accusing atheists of having a hive mind?

Perhaps they are assuming that every atheist is but a manifestation of the devil having abandoned their immortal soul and the very possibility of authentic individual choice when they turned against God.
