I'm going to go with #6: MK needs others to voice their objections to aspects of religion about which he also is critical so that he can consciously focus on defending his religion. While he recognizes that his understanding of his religion is inadequate as it stands he is not content to throw away the bath just in case there may be a baby in it somewhere.
