Poisson's Spot, the biggest burn in physics

Poisson's Spot, the biggest burn in physics

A cute little story I found. The short version is a scientist posed a hypothesis that seemed absurd to his peers at the time. Another scientist, Poisson posed the experiment that would prove it one way or the other as a joke and laughed all the way home.

A third party however saw the joke as the perfect experiment and went through with it. Proved the hypothesis correct and advanced our understanding of physics forever. Thus, we discovered that light is not made of simple particles but, has wave like properties that can result in what we now call, Poisson's Spot.
