Do environments foster geniuses or intellect?
July 3, 2018 at 10:00 am
I ask this because one day I was reading the biography of Tesla online, and read a comment that said something like "a genius our time is unlikely to give" or something like that. It made think if indeed the environment helps people develope their intellect or give people opportunties to do what they do best.
What do you think? Do we live in a era in which so much entertainment stops us from developing our talents, etc?

Nothing can stop a person from developing their talents if their hearts are truly in it. A heart of stone and a fierce determination may be needed to go further with it.
That being said. I do believe we live in times where we bombard ourselves with constant distractions which can hinder a person from ever discovering their true passions.

The question is so vague as to be meaningless. In many ways yes, in many ways no, in most ways..we wouldn;t even know.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

That's an ages-old argument: Nature or nurture?
Surely, both play a role.
Tesla is an interesting example. He may have been a real-life Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory). He was certainly a genius but also a crackpot. The guy fell in love with a pigeon and likely died a virgin. He was quite dysfunctional.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I just think that we live in very accelarated and structured times.
Go to school, go to university, learn this, go to work for a company because you have to make money, do that, etc. I feel back in the day people had more freedom. To develope things, instead of following a set path. Plus the entertainment stops us from doing things such as writing, or doing math.
Who knows, maybe Tesla or Newton would had become gamers instead of scientists if videogames existed in their time.

It's definitely easier to express yourself now if you're a genius than any other time in history I would imagine.
There's more opportunity, better communication, better education.
Even just taking into consideration that it's easier to live without dying in your childhood than any other time in history, if you live in a first world country i mean.
It might be less obvious to a standard person who are the geniuses of this time and what they're working on because they're not a part of history yet and what they're working on might not be done.
And with an abundance of geniuses, or at least more of them, it's bound to be more difficult to notice any individual person.
I can't see a genius being distracted by computer games, they'd either get bored or you might get a few of them becoming youtubers and providing entertainment. I can't imagine an ambitious, driven intelligent, individual being satisfied with playing Minecraft in a basement with their life.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.

Genius would be uncertain, intellect is yes. Have you not heard the term "book smart"?
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
