It's a puzzle, and no mistake.  I've always been much more concerned with what other humans would be willing to fuck me and what steps I could take to bring about that happy eventuality.

RE: Homophobia
Okay, I'll bite: how are same-sex marriages fundamentally different than traditional marriages? And why is that difference, if it exists, a bad thing?

This is the second thread on the topic, and once again our resident Christians are dancing around the issue. More winging about changing definitions, more assertions without justification, but no substance.

EDIT: and, once again, calling same-sex marriages "pretend marriages" makes you an asshole, full stop.

I guess it's true: the first casualty of any war is truth. And this is war.

I'm confused...who's advocating for legalizing sex between an adult and a minor?

Tribalism.

RE: Homophobia
If we compared homophobic attitudes to religiosity for different countries, I wonder whether there would be a correlation? I'm thinking there would be a fairly strong positive one.

Undoubtedly.

And, to expand on the idea of tribalism being the cause, it's simple: if you can control how a group engages in sexual intercourse, and if you can control a group's food supply, you can make that group do whatever you want. Wrapping it up in mysticism helps the bitter pill go down. The OT reads like a field manual on how to successfully build a cult.

There are Christians on this very forum who have said they support gay marriage, but then they turn right around and defend the Christians who don't.

I feel like explaining to them that is not what the word "support" means.

It happens...a lot.

If you don't mind the idea of gay marriage, or you support it, and you a Christian, then you need to speak up against the bigotry of your fellow Christians.  It does happen.  I think Jimmy Carter is a recent example of a high profile person telling Christians to start acting more Christ like and accept gay marriage.  But he's far outweighed by the high profile bigots.  And it's all the little people that really matter.

So Christians who support gay marriage: Stand up and fight for love and acceptance and kindness, like Jesus would!  Don't defend another Christian just because they claim the same faith as you!  Your personal support is worse than meaningless if you defend the bigotry of others.

RE: Homophobia
OK. As a middle aged white male, I used to harbour the delusion that there really is not a lot of such discrimination in the real world.

Then my eldest "came out" as trans. I had no issue with that myself, but bloody hell a whole lot of other people did. That journey (still ongoing) opened my eyes to the simple fact that the scale of bigotted crap that gets wheeled about is very real. And just a bit scary. Some parents in her (now him) school mounted a campaign to have him ejected from the school because other children might get infected with "da ghey".

This rot goes further that one might think. I was talking to my ex-wifes boss about an unrelated matter and mentioned my eldest's transition in passing. Turns out she has been concealing it from her colleagues due to shame.

Before, I would have said that kind of rubbish doesn't really happen. But afterwards...bloody hell it absolutely does.

Lets not forget the FLDS/Jeffs clan. BTW, they consider themselves christian.

RE: Homophobia
I think some religious people are more tolerant of homosexuals than some atheists.
At least they don't want to kill them.
