IKR, lol?

Moccasins are almost impossible to misidentify.  Whenever a person finds themselves wondering "is this a cottonmouth or some other snake?" - it's the other snake.

Forgot to add, an easier way to get rid of it..would be to get bigger fish.

In snake culture, that is considered a dick move.
"Every luxury has a deep price. Every indulgence, a cosmic cost. Each fiber of pleasure you experience causes equivalent pain somewhere else. This is the first law of emodynamics [sic]. Joy can be neither created nor destroyed. The balance of happiness is constant.

Fact: Every time you eat a bite of cake, someone gets horsewhipped.

Facter: Every time two people kiss, an orphanage collapses.

Factest: Every time a baby is born, an innocent animal is severely mocked for its physical appearance. Don't be a pleasure hog. Your every smile is a dagger. Happiness is murder.

Vote "yes" on Proposition 1321. Think of some kids. Some kids."

I've never seen one in person, but I am a snake enthusiast. From what I know, getting it to show its mouth is the best way to tell if it's a cottonmouth. Without seeing its underside or its face up close, I can't say that it isn't. *If* its coloring is as uniform as it seems in that picture, I don't think it's likely. Again, I'm no expert. Just a fan.

Not your eyesight at all. That's why I prefaced my comment with "from what I can tell." I cant see it clearly at all. Mostly I'm just advising caution. While very few people actually die from venomous snake bites, it's always better safe than sorry.

Oh, certainly use caution when you live in one of the areas of the country that has lots of venomous snakes. Wear high boots and tuck your pants in when you're wandering around that area. Keep a picture of the thing in case it bites you. Antivenin will do the trick.

*If* I recall correctly, water moccasins will get all, "look at me" before they'll actually bite you, so you have time to back away if you have a chance to see it whip its head back and show its fangs. Very few snakes will actively try to bite you just for being near them. That's why you're usually looking good if you just watch out not to step on one.

In Beccs culture it's considered answering an all important question while potentially keeping kids off your lawn in future...

Notice the head is wider than the neck. Apparently that's key.

Have you noticed a newly arrived naked chick and apple tree in the yard?

Yep. Snakes, venomous or not, aren't much interested in biting anything other than prey unless sick, cornered or threatened. Even then, they typically display in some way or another before they strike. At least, any you're likely to find in North America.
