That Evangelicals didn't understand their own religion does not surprise me. However, that their understanding of said religion is far more liberal than the actual texts does legitimately surprise me, especially since, sometime around Watergate, they've basically chosen to prioritise whatever the Republican Party teaches over the tenets of their own religion. Then again, if God didn't accept other forms of religion, how could they accept Jared Kushner, and if he wasn't willing to turn a blind eye to sin, then how could he anoint someone who grabs women by their pussies?

There was a similar remark made in an article I read about Republicans switching their prior rhetoric to embrace protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Christianity has long embraced rather despicable things, so it's at least a good thing that there is a sea change in the basic values of evangelicals, even if it runs contrary to the official doctrines. This can only foreshadow greater wins among the "nones" as evangelicals come to realize the disconnect between their religion and their values.

they would stop being Christian? Or would they still support it like they do Trump no matter what crimes and lies he commits?

Oh that is easily explained. "giving" your firstborn to god means that your son will be coerced into becoming a priest. As a born and raised crapolic, I actually had that pressure. Or your daughter to be a nun for the same reasons.
