Trump Claims He Can Use Executive Order to End Birthright Citizenship

I'm not too surprised that he's pulled this latest one out of his ass. He will have some difficulty overriding the US Constitution without litigation. The American Civil Liberties Union likely has a motion to stay drafted already.

He can't unilaterally amend the Constitution by executive order.
If by any stretch of the imagination that were allowed to happen we might as well burn the document and put the entire Congress out to pasture.

He also lied and claimed that "no other country in the world" allows birthright citizenship.

Or maybe he really believed that.  He doesn't seem overly concerned with doing even minimal fact- checking before opening his mouth.

But if this makes it to the Supreme Court, they could just rubber stamp it.

Let's not forget that it's a Constitutional Amendment that limits presidents to 2 terms (after FDR was elected to 4 terms). I'm guessing he'll try to Executive-Order that amendment out of existence in around 2023 or 2024.

It's been said about every president in my lifetime, and probably a few before, that they were going to pull something to remain in office forever.  Since it's never happened, I'll remain skeptical on that one.

It takes a 2/3s majority of both Congressional houses just to propose an amendment -- or a general Constitutional Convention, which has, to date, never happened in the amendment process.
The president gets no official say in the matter.
If it does get proposed you need 38 states to ratify it.  Ain't gonna happen.

I don't foresee the current Supreme Court doing that, even given it's conservative bias, but then, stranger things have happened. It would undermine confidence in the courts, politics, Republicans, and the rule of law, but I can't see such a decision leading to anything as serious as civil war, given that the outcome of such a result would not meaningfully impact most Americans.

One of the few things my husband and I agree on "if we win the lottery" is that if the orange fucktard gets elected for a second term we will choose a more intelligent country and move there.  I've never felt that way before donny-boy.
