Doesn't "no sentient creature should ever be needlessly tortured or abused" imply that sentient creatures deserve the right to never be needlessly tortured or abused?
I don't think so. People should never be called faggots but I don't think we need a law saying so.

The problem would come when it came time to defining torture and abuse. Animals can't really tell us what they consider pain or irritation.

Also, Sae might call you Doubtie, but I'm going to find another short nick for you. Thinking

I wanted something I could quickly adapt to, given that I didn't see the change coming until it was upon us...

'Evie' sounds more like this:

'Doubtie' just isn't as cute or fun sounding...

Just.... black and white... and boring, and a bit depressing really...

You need something cute that will truly replace 'Evie' Sad

RE: Animal rights, veganism and PETA
First, animal rights.

I love animals. Yes, all animals. I think creatures are neat. However, I don't think much about their rights, except in a few select instances. I'm not really sure they have a "right" to anything. Nonetheless, I would like to see wild animals given their place in this world and I would like to see pets kept healthy and happy. As for animals raised for food. Raise them like they are pets and kill them quick.

Second, veganism.

I could never be vegan. I have nothing against it, but don't try to guilt me or I will chew my burger with my mouth open in your face.

Third, PETA

I fucking hate PETA. They are the worst animal activists of all time. If you want to make a point, don't hire 50 idiots with one brain cell combined to do it. (They can keep making naked people ads, though. I am cool with that.)

My feelings on eating meat are pretty much summed up by the fact that have cut up just about every kind of animal meat you can find in a restaurant. I have cut up pig's heads to be served in various ways. I have eaten just about every type of food I have cooked and I have never lost sleep over it. It's also very hard to cook for vegetarians. Everything that tastes good has at least meat stock in it.

I think animals can express pain and irritation. We just have to pay attention. Sure, they don't speak English, but I am pretty sure many of us have seen animals in pain and can recognize it for what it is.

I had a snake (Memnoch) that got very sick in the last few months of her life. During that time, she would stick her head under the water in the water dish in her tank and stay there. It freaked me out. She also made this weird high-pitched noise that was like a very low whistle (while her head was not under water). One day, I came home from work and she was hanging from her little tree with her head in the water dish . . . dead. I don't know for sure, but I think Memnoch drowned herself. I know it sounds weird, but there you have it. Long story short, I could tell she was in pain.

Didn't Penn and Teller say something about "if animals deserve rights, they also deserve to pay taxes"?

Anyway, I don't much care about the opinions of vegans for this reason right now: if food really could be an aphrodisiac, then I am in love with a transplanted New Yorker who just made me the best damn sandwich EVER, and if you try to take my ham and salami away from me, I will beat you over the head.

Here in Adelaide we're culturally deprived. We CANNOT get a decent bagel. (I make my own when I can be arsed) Nor have I ever come across a hot pastrami on rye. There are no kosher delis in this state. Eating at a good kosher deli in New York spoils you.

Melbourne is arse deep in kosher butchers and a kosher deli which sells the best Vieniese-style cakes and pastries in Australia.
