Do you really think saying “Christianity is stupid” is a slur? Or am I missing something?
Which would sound least confrontational to you, "Atheism is stupid", or, "I think atheism is wrong, and here's why". Which of those two terms will encourage you to engage in an actual conversation where you bring your facts and evidence into a discussion to prove your argument, and, which is more likely to cause you to be combative and to encourage you to be involved in a shit flinging contest. I agree with DodosAreDead on this. It's a loophole that will end up in back and forth personal attacks rather than having actual discussions. Having a separate civility thread where members could sign up to have uninterrupted conversations was much less confusing than trying to figure out what rule you may be breaking with these new changes.

There’s a difference between being confrontational and being a slur. I see that your response to my post didn’t actually address my post at all. That’s okay.

I'm not collecting any information shell, so I'll assume that was at the person above me.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

I don't think anyone is making the case that things don't get heated or that curse word or slurs are so abhorrent that they should be eliminated. I think most mods are absolutely  fine with "colorful" language and use it regularly. I don't think anyon's being prudish here. I think they're just trying to find a way so the initial thread title doesn't aim to provoke or name call.

This exactly.  No one is saying that phrases like 'All Christians are bungholes' or 'All atheists are immoral dimwits' are verboten. Just keep them out of the thread titles.

This isn't asking a lot.

I think the main complaint is that it isn't asking enough, though others act like it's asking a lot, so I think we succeeded. We're in the middle. Perfect. Big Grin

Again, I would stress that this is the first of many changes. We thought that by doing them one by one we would be able to get feedback on each individually. I disagree entirely that we hold derision and name calling very near and dear.

Oh, I never meant the entire mod team holds derision and name calling as very near but some obviously do.

How is it a loophole for putting slurs in thread titles?

Ok, first of all, whether stupid is considered a slur or not is a completely different matter, which I don't want to get into.
But - saying "Christianity is (insert slur)" as opposed to "Christians are (insert slur)" seems to have the same hostile, aggressive vibe to me. And if that's what you guys are trying to prevent with this rule, then allowing  "Christianity is (insert slur)" defeats the purpose, IMHO.

I think Christianity is stupid, and I'm not hostile or aggressive to Christians. I think if people are going to be offended over their ideas being attacked, they've come to the wrong place. By "place," I mean Planet Earth.

You may not know everything I've said to Tibs in private.

Defending free speech and the ability of users to make full use of the power of language through the least restrictive means necessary isn't celebrating incivility, and I personally am offended by your slur, Whateverist.
