On the subject of Hell and Salvation
RE: On the subject of Hell and Salvation
What a wonderfully worded hasty generalization of an entire groups ability to reason and denial of science Fred, and after an apology none the less. Kindly go fuck yourself.

As to jor’s measured response
How can you show that what you believe is true? I believe Christianity is true through personal experience, personal observation, reliance on other similar experiences, and studying the Bible.

Why do you believe the bible? Because it supports my personal understanding of my relationship with God and, as a whole, informs my personal morality as an authoritative sounding board daily. I also feel the Bible is the inspired word of God and feel it holds multiple perspectives on the life of Jesus Christ and is composed in a way that is indicative of an overarching plan and is inerrant.

And how do you "know" anything about God and what God has to say on anything in order to claim that you believe Him? I don’t “know” if what I believe or follow is from God, aliens, satan, Thor or Vishnu. I trust that when what I reason to be real, is described in a 2000 year old book that it might have some insights, and have faith and hope that my life here is better for following that compass.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

@tacky

Sorry if I gave the impression I was referring to Christians. Of course I was not. I was referring to the rather extreme group we have here.
I always suspected at least one is a convert because of the simple minded dogmatic views and arguments.

I was speaking to other members rather than to any of our resident apologists, who I ignore a much as I can. You are a christian on an atheist forum
You wont usually find ANY atheists on a Christian forum . You and your friends are tolerated here because you stop us from getting bored, and for comic relief. I understand that reasoning, but disagree. Christians would not be tolerated here if I had any say in the matter. So pull yer fucking head in sport.

I'll laugh at you and call you an asshole for the rest of it, and for reason...but this I understand.  Lean hard into this and cut the rest, lol. IOW, don't be an asshole. You know that you don't believe from "studying bible"...please.....

We're two of the creatures capable of honesty, or even understanding the concept, in all of the universe so far as we can tell. There's no need to bullshit ourselves or each other.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

You’re very welcome to your opinion good sir, and I wasn’t bullshitting, that’s my understanding and experience. If you’d just like to accept the one, alright. I’m going back to my enchiladas

Imho you are just contributing to his point, trying to call him out for alleged generalisations, then explicitly confirming all his accusations, by engaging in namely:
  • Having a real low standard/having bad reasons for believing extraordinal claims (personal experience, personal observation, reliance on other similar experiences; I also feel the Bible is)
  • Admitting to abandoning any standard for reasonable belief (faith)
  • Being engaged in confirmation biases (supports my personal understanding)
  • Believing outright falsehoods (is inerrant)
  • Immorality or cherry picking, make your choice (informs my personal morality) or
  • Being ammoral (informs my personal morality as an authoritative sounding board)

...all of those being clear signs of a lack (or willfully so) of rational thinking and having abandones reason. Then you go and proudly parade them around. Dodgy

The only redeemig quality i see in your post is the last part of the last sentence: "hope that my life here is better for following that compass". I hope though you just forgot to mention other peoples´ lives.

It's a form of "natural selection". Most Christians we're going to get here are going to be of the extreme type, because most moderate Christians would hesitate to participate in a forum like this.

There are exceptions of course, like tackattack. I welcome theists like him in this forum.

I wasn;t referring to the bullshit of your experience, Tack..that's "the one" I'm accepting.  People have experiences, experiences are compelling regardless of the veracity of their contents.

I called bs, specifically, on the bs of coming to christian belief as a product of studying magic book.  This isn't an opinion, we know that this is not how belief works....any belief.

The fact that you were "studying" magic book, itself, demonstrates that you had a preexisting condition ( Wink ) which compelled you to that act.
