Disappointing History

My Scottish uncle would tell me and my cousins that we were related to Mary queen of the Scots and Robert the Bruce.
Of course, this was after a few scotches every Hogmanay and was bullshit.
We were also told we were closely related to Sir Robert Menzies, which turned out to be true.

Menzies? Really? Interesting. How closely?

30 years ago that was not something one would even admit, in say the front bar of worker's pub.

Today? There is no doubt in my mind that Sir Robert would fit effortlessly  into Bill shorten's cabinet.--OR indeed lead the Labor Party. He would be a huge improvement. 

The song "The Wild Colonial Boy"---- My grandfather said that one of the characters  was based on his uncle. In real life, the poor fellow allegedly 'became hanged'

 --my grandpa was a stereotypical Irish copper, and cheerfully corrupt about illegal gambling .When her retired , 'the boys' from the local 2 up school gave him a really nice lounge chair. We still have it. We grandpa also liked the occasional nip of poteen.

My great grandmother was a Menzies, cousin or 2nd cousin of Sir Robert.
I'd have to ask mum for more details.
