RE: Nukes: post your imagined scenario of the next war

Make no mistake, I've done research on the subject. If we're actually using these nukes, and if there's some sort of nuclear exchange, it won't matter who starts it. We are fucked. Have you ever watched Threads? It's a film about the aftermath of a nuclear war, and it's brutally realistic. There was an army of scientific advisors to elaborate on how horrible the world (at least in the general vicinity of the blast) would end up becoming; basically, it ends up virtually medieval, but without any of the fun parts. People have to subsist on agriculture, most people are literally starving (at one point, they're forced to limit caloric intake for non-workers to 500 per day; even Mauthausen, brutal even by the standards of Nazi death camps, didn't reach that point until the end of the war), capital punishment and martial law are commonplace, the children born after are uneducateable, modern medicine is gone (instead of antibiotics, they use water with table salt added and pour it on wounds; at one point, a woman gives birth and she has to remove the umbilical cord with her teeth), and (the only consequence depicted based on dodgy science, but even then, there's still disagreement about that) the ozone layer is totally destroyed.
The people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are lucky that Fat Man and Little Boy only had a combined yield of 36 kilotonnes (21 for Fat Man, 15 for Little Boy). You almost never hear of nukes with yields that low in post-1946 literature.

There was a film about the end of the world.
Called "On The Beach" Ava Gardner , Gregory Peck, Anthony Perkins, and Fred Astaire. It was set in Melbourne. Essentially the rest of the world had been destroyed, and this group were waiting for the fallout to reach them.
Ava Gardner endeared herself to Aussies, except those in Sydney, by saying Melbourne was the perfect setting for a film about the end of the world. Sydney siders simply applauded ,loudly.
On the Beach is a 1959 American post-apocalyptic science fiction drama film from United Artists, produced and directed by Stanley Kramer, that stars Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins.[2] This black-and-white film is based on Nevil Shute's 1957 novel of the same name depicting the aftermath of a nuclear war.[3] Unlike the novel, no one is assigned blame for starting the war; the film hints that the threat of annihilation may have arisen from an accident or misjudgment.

The scariest film about an atomic war I've seen is a British made for Tv film called "Threads".(1984) Makes the American The Day After' seem pretty glossy.
Couldn't find it free on Youtube, but did find an interesting comparison between "Threads' and "The Day After"'

I've always known exactly where I want to be the event of a nuclear attack; ground zero. Simply cannot imagine the horror of trying to stay alive after the event.
Will there be such an attack on Australia, from say North Korea? Who knows. I just hope they have the decency to wait until after I've died from natural causes .

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, why'all
War, huh, good god
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives
I said, war, huh good god, why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
War, whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Oh, war it's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die, ah, war-huh, good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) it's got one friend that's the undertaker
Oh, war, has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life
It can only take it away
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But lord knows there's got to be a better way
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for you tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it
huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Stand up and shout it nothing

AOW and nuclear holocaust are the pasts boogeymen. The next war (and future wars) are far more likely to take the form of limited and covert proxy engagement in urban environments combined with overt financial or technical subversion of infrastructure and critical facilities. It would be impossible to unwind the clock on this, as the past few decades have shown that you can inflict far greater and more lasting damage with less risk to yourself by employing non-traditional combatants to bleed the other guys conventional forces to breaking point.
Meanwhile, nukes are most useful when not used. They lose their value as a deterrent the moment you loose them and everyone else starts firing back. I can't remember who said it, but the surest way to lose the next war is to plan and fight it like the last one. That's what fucked us in the middle east from the word go, lol.
All that said..I really loved Alas, Babylon as a kid. There was no nuclear war, the conflict after launch was mainly fighting off bands of raiders and keeping your food and water and salt and such secure, lol. Whoever happened to remain standing through sheer luck was the victor by default.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Damn, maybe you really are dumb. Nuclear holocaust isn't what the libtards are thinking about these days? A nuclear holocaust is just as possible now as it ever was. And from a purely rational perspective, we have to question how long we can have nuclear weapons without anyone ever unleashing them. Forever is a long time. 75 years is a short time. Did it only take us a few decades to convince ourselves that we are not a danger to ourselves?
We do not inherit the world from our parents. We borrow it from our children.

Sure, yeah, I'm optimistic that peoples basest self interests can be depended on to keep our violence hobby within successful boundaries. So long as states get more bang for their cyberfuckery and little green man bucks than they ever could..and with less risk...than their nuclear legacy or programs - I think they'll continue operating in that manner.
-nuts are a going concern, I think. Just to throw that out there. The odds that the last words spoken by our civilization are some variation on god is great or down with the state followed by a low grade blast are probably higher than they've ever been.
That's the next 9/11, right?
