"No one - least of all me - wants to see a cute, cuddly koala die of thirst. "
Me neither mate, although they are not especially cuddly; they will piss on you and give you fleas..--------- I love all of our native animals. I'm extremely fortunate in that there is a linear park running across the back of my property, about 200 metres further down the hill. I see and hear all kinds of native birds and some animals. There is a colony of koalas and even some 'roos. ( I've only ever actually seen a koala, once)
While kangaroos are considered a pest, koalas are endangered, not so much from drought but from a disease which has killed thousands of them.
There is also an ongoing threat from introduced species, such as Foxes, and feral cats. Introduced species have been causing havoc to our environment and among the smaller native animals and birds, for decades.
Wild introduced specie sin Oz include: Rabbits, Foxes, goats, camels, horses, pigs, buffalo and camels, plus feral cats, which get very large, up to the size of an American Bobcat (I've seen one that size.). Dingos are also an introduced species, we think they came with the aborigines, about 50,000 yeast ago..
In my city, you must get council approval to cut down a gum tree over a certain girth. Fines can be quite large.
((((((((((((((((((((((((9)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Koalas numbers are dropping partially as a result of the organism chlamydia, which has four major effects:
blindness
pneumonia
urinary tract infection
reproductive tract infections, ultimately rendering animals infertile.
Scientists are still working on a cure, as this disease is decimating some of the populations on the mainland.
