The city of Chicago now says he owes them an additional $130K.

Yea, that is not the same as dropping the charges. He agreed as you just posted to forfeit his bond, but on top of that has to do community service and commit no more crimes for a period, and then and only then will his record be expunged. This is common for first time offenders. What cops are pissed about is the amount of time and money spent, investigating this, so they think the DA and judge let him get off easy.

He's not a first time offender. He's been in trouble for lying to law enforcement before.

He certainly wasn't found not guilty. And the city is completely within its rights to seek compensation for his false police report.

On March 28, 2019, Chicago city attorneys under the guidance of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson, sent the legal team of Jussie Smollett a demand letter to repay the city the sum of $130,106.15 payable by certified funds to the "City of Chicago" within 7 days for the "expended overtime hours in the investigation of this matter." The letter further threatens if this amount is not timely paid, then the Department of Law may prosecute for the alleged false statements to the City under section 1-21-010[110] of the Municipal Code of Chicago or "pursue any other legal remedy available at law."

A violation of this ordinance imposes a fine of not less than $500.00 and a maximum of $1,000.00, plus up to three times the amount of damages the City sustains as a result and the option to seek recovery of court costs, collection costs, and attorney fees. If the City of Chicago were to proceed with the lawsuit, then the Judge would have to litigate whether Jussie is guilty in orchestrating the attack and filing the false police report. Only then could a Judge determine if the City is liable to damages related to the extra expended hours investigating this matter. To add to this, the judge would only need a preponderance of evidence (51% - 49%) to determine innocence or guilt, a much lower standard than beyond a reasonable doubt which is used in criminal proceedings.[111]

"wasn't found not guilty" isn't exactly how that works, or is it? You certainly haven't been found not guilty of an infinite list of possible accusations. Open your wallet.

Well gosh, skippy. Let's see here. He forfeited his bond and agreed to 16 hours of community service. And he's on some sort of probation. And the case against him was really, really strong. And he made the deal to avoid going to trial. Yeah, I am completely comfortable with saying that he's guilty as fuck.

And it looks like the city of Chicago has a mechanism for going after him for the money that he so obviously owes to the city. So good for Chicago.

Sure, faced with the intimidating power of the state and whatever consequence may arise, people agree to all sorts of shit.  That's not an admission or a conviction.

OFC the state has "a mechanism", they always do.

Your comfort is noted and completely unsurprising.

What's unsurprising is how willing you are to be a liar for Smollett. Yet another case of a guy who think's that he's a lefty emulating Trump's willingness to lie about absolutely anything.

RE: Smollet Charges Dropped
@“Yonadav” It’s no surprise that gae made this thread or that he’s taking this position. He had little to say in the thread about smollet being charged (if he even commented in it I’m not sure) but was the first to make a thread about his charges being dropped.

If he didn’t have such an obviously biased narrative I might be able to take him seriously. Clearly the CPD had an open and shut case (texts between the two parties about money being exchanged when Smollett claimed he didn’t know them, video evidence of them buying the supplies, so on and so forth), but Smolletts wealth and connections override all of that, for better or for worse.

Notice gae is not at all taking the same attitude toward trump, still crying conspiracy that he must be guilty of something. But when someone on the other side of the aisle is “exonerated,” he claims oh, this time it’s true!

Once again, a complete joke. It’s honestly humorous at this point. Starting to wonder if gae is just a troll.

With trump it’s “yea but he wasn’t exonerated” but with smollett its “yea but he wasn’t convicted.” Jesus Christ man. So logically inconsistent. It’s insane people can have such a skewed view of reality.
