I had low expectations going into the final season, since it's really sucked pretty badly since Season 5 (with a few episodes serving as wonderful exceptions). But I've been pretty pleased so far. The last episode was great.

Dany's story is about owning up to her past, seeing how her family has made terrible decisions and choosing a different path for herself. I 100% agree that she can be ruthlessly ambitious and single-minded to a fault and that it's still something that her character needs to develop out of, or at least become self-aware of, but she has already demonstrated that she's grown in that respect by choosing Tyrion as her hand and repeatedly accepting the council of her advisers when her instincts are pushing her to do the wrong thing. We've also seen what happens when she doesn't listen to those advisers: she burns alive the families of her allies and potentially turns them against her.

I'm seeing her move more toward a place where she recognizes that what she's been told for so long is true: Westerosee will not accept a foreign ruler easily. Repeatedly over the last episode we've seen how loyal people are to the Starks, how people want to fight for the Starks, how their personal connections are with the Starks and Dany is repeatedly being frozen out (no pun intended). People are pledging loyalty to Jon, declaring they want to make up for how they've done wrong to Sansa and Bran, reuniting with old friends in Arya and Jon, etc. The Starks are the ones embedded in Westeros and I think Dany will come to realize this. I don't think she'll give up the throne easily, or willingly say to Jon "Hey, you have deeper ties to this place, you become king instead of me," but I think she's going to eat a big slice of humble pie before the series wraps up on the issue of her right to rule simply because she's a Targaryen, and thinking she's earned that right by actions she's taken in Essos.

Does bring up a good point about the Night King and Cersei though.
