A couple more episodes would have helped - the White Walkers could have put up more of a fight, for one thing, but - personally - I'd have liked the show to have taken more time with its last few seasons, as well as this one. Many plots were cut short, in a fairly abrupt and unsubtle way and without much explanation, or consequences. And this last season is pretty much bare-bones in terms of story - almost all the remaining characters are in one location and have pretty much the same goals and the rest of the - once rich and diverse - world might as well not exist. It's way too linear for my taste, never mind the (relatively) break-neck speed with which major events unfold and a lack of sense of the passage of time, which makes the world of Westeros feel small.

I believe GOT should have had at least 10 seasons, considering the wealth of source material, though I doubt that was ever a realistic possibility, from the financial perspective. Of course - that in itself wouldn't guarantee that it would have been better, or that the ending wouldn't be disappointing, because quality of writing doesn't necessarily improve with quantity.

Sure, but we already know, that the main threat, that set the tone for the entire story, is gone. Seemingly - so are the other remaining main villains. And while the "Mad Queen"  could have been an interesting plot development, there's not enough time left for it to go anywhere. At this point I can't see how we can get a fitting ending to the story - unless we decide, that the theme of the show is stabbing misbehaving monarchs. I hope I'm wrong and that there's a twist coming, but I'm pretty sure, that - whatever the ending - the reaction of fans will be much more entertaining... Popcorn
I agree with your much of your assessment.

After a two year wait I do think it would have been nice to have a full season with enough time for the wrapping up of storylines not to be so rushed.  If they were going to cut down the number of episodes and total hours then they really could have shaved some time off the endless blasts of fire and the too dark to watch battle with the Night King and wights and used it to bring more stories to satisfying conclusions.  It seems to me we will see a parade of 'the ends' or cliffhangers as far as the rest of the characters are concerned instead of completed story arcs that live up to the character/story development.

Sam was pretty important to the story unfolding (Gilly too) and they just sort of vanished.  I am not sure what could have been added there.  Gilly is pregnant and the implication is that life will go on for them but it did seem abrupt.

Jamie and Cersei being crushed was also a little bit of a letdown (IMHO).  I was good with them dying together...in together and out together...but I was expecting something more.

The Clegane brothers...yeah, I really did think that would end up with both of them dead...or dead again, as was the case with Sandor.

This season has been a dash for the finish line.

Yay riveting TV .

Themes like ?

They took uncharacteristic actions and made uncharacteristically bad decisions so the required events could unfold with the appropriate stakes.
Bad decisions  that are not like earlier like ? Uncharacteristic decisions  like ?

Quote:
Characters were spared the deaths they'd sown so they'd be available for later scenes.
You mean like what they have been doing since season 2

Quote:Gone was the conflict between complicated people with incompatible goals.
I think not being turned into zombies is pretty compatible goal and really ones complicated anymore are you sure were watching the same show ?

Quote:Grey morality turned black and white.
Like ? The Night King was never going to be a nice guy he was a weapon made to kill shit . Cersi has always been cruel power hungry bitch . Dany literally says over and over again she was going to burn cities down .

Quote: Characters rushed through their foreshadowed arcs for the thinnest of reasons, or in some cases reversed their arcs entirely.
Yes because arcs can only go one way apparently . And rushed like ?

Quote: the White Walkers could have put up more of a fight, for one thing, but
How much more of a fight ? How many episodes till you then be complaining “well this dragging on “

I have yet to hear a good example that in any way effects the plot in significant way

You mean focused on the actual plot

Quote:almost all the remaining characters are in one location and have pretty much the same goals and the rest of the - once rich and diverse - world might as well not exist.
Because this is were the plots happening

As opposed to the slow meandering sub plots of the earlier  6 seasons

Considering it's been going on since season two how much more do you want . People live with this idea Dany just turned mad . She's going on about burning armies and city since the beginning .The only reason Dany hasn't done this earlier is because there was always someone to talk her out of it .

Are you still upset for me laughing at your idea Tyrions "true parentage " is actually a thing let alone a loose end they need to wrap up or because I have not jumped on the hate season 8 bandwagon .

Yeah, I read what you stated - it's confused nonsense. Nobody "pushed" Elvis as an alternative to Hendrix.  You got your 50's and your 60's black guys mixed up, but you keep on arguing for pages, because you always have to have the last word and you don't feel the need to provide a citation, but instead you angrily repeat the same points, over and over.
And as a side I would point out all the mistakes in this statement but as was pointed out that would derail the thread

So, I watched the last episode again and feel a little differently about a few things.

Hmmm….going to think about it for a while.

I haven't watched Game of Thrones but I watched a battle scene with dragons from the fifth (I think) episode and it's kind of unclear why they didn't use ballistas on the city walls. The dragon attacks the city and they don't even try to target and shoot.

Errr... Because Daenerys cleverly timed her attack for when the sun was high. That meant the balista crews were on their lunch-break... Tongue

Dragons are fast and turning the weapon to keep up is  slow and the whole thing with the sun

So in Westeros if you have massive walls and a besieging force, standard tactics are to mass your army IN FRONT of the massive walls. You also line up your trebuches in front of your forces despite them being vulnerable and able to fire over your troops.

And remember how long it took Arya to get to Winterfell, it took months and they had to negotiate the twins now its an afternoon stroll.

None of what has happned is bad in itself but it is rushed. It needed time to make sense.

Okey, I get it. They just have a stormtrooper gene: "Those dragons are too fast for our turbolasers!"

No matter which way things go tonight, I will be sad to know the show is done.  I have enjoyed it very much and I am not much of a TV or movie watcher.

sigh
