I suppose a candle would be a "waste of money" compared to a flashlight, too..but as far as the analogy goes all we have is the seti candle. It'd be nice if we had more powerful means, but we don't.
The resolution to whether or not we're alone in the universe has more and more meaningful implications than the resolution of whether or not there are gods. You don't seem to take issue to the collection plate, or the vast amounts of wealth accrued by religious institutions and used...primarily it would seem, for real estate deals and covering up sexual abuse...and yet....
We can be frank and honest with each other and ourselves, I think, yes? The reasons you've given aren't the motivations you have for objecting to seti or to the notion of extraterrestrial life. You don't mind people blowing money. You don't mind people searching without finding. Hell, you -can't- mind enormously long odds. For whatever silly reason, you think that the existence of extraterrestrial life threatens your belief system. All of this has been a reactionary compulsion to protect the valued articles of your very specific faith....it;s something you bleed into just about every convo, from what I've seen on the boards.

So..... just some questions for/to you.
(Sorry if they've been asked and I missed them.  )
Do you think there's a/the possibility for there to be life on other planetary bodies?
Not inteligent(s), just 'Organisms'.
Not asking for any 'Hard' kind of response. Just maybe something in the realm of "Yeah, maybe" Or "Nah, not really" kind of thing.

For me, personally? I'm of the "Yeah, there's a really high possibility of life being out there. But that anything of comparable 'Inteligence' is probably so rare as to be either seperated from us by a good amount of time or else it's developed in the next galaxy over."

Half or more of the catholic churches charity funding comes straight from the fed and local gov...making it an arm of the welfare state with funny hats and dresses.
