RE: Atheism and super religious family

Thanks for sharing, this is something that a lot of atheists deal with. My boyfriend's family is strict Polish Roman Catholic. He is an atheist, like me. We will most likely get married in the next few years, but we worry about the shit storm that's going to happen once they realize that neither of us wants anything to do with religion.
I put 'secular humanist' instead of 'atheist' on Facebook. I thought it sounded a bit gentler, religious folks tend to find 'atheism' more shocking, somehow.

Also, vdub, you've got amazing strength.
I have never been close to any part of my family, thanks to certain dynamics that led me to rely on my friends for the support I needed, but my roommate is extraordinarily close to her immediate and most of her extended family and so I have a bit of understanding of how hard it can be when you suddenly become the outcast. If her family turned against her she would be absolutely devastated.
Keep your chin up - maybe it would help if you said "It's not that I choose to be an atheist - I can't help not believing what I don't believe - but you've made the choice to be honest with you as family should be extremely difficult now, and that's not fair."

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.
