Not the point. Huge difference between nomenclature and scientific classification.

Fish and mammals both swim in the ocean, but fish are always fish and mammals are always mammals.

And regardless, I think some, maybe not you, but some may be missing the point in my original post. The Tweeter refused to call the dolphin a mammal and got angry that someone said it was a mammal.

If you have gills you are a fish, if you have a blowhole and lungs, you are a mammal, regardless of nomenclature.
Umm, no.

Both are referred to as dolphins.  Deal with it.

BTW - that difference isn't so different.

So? Still a huge difference between how laypeople name things and how scientists name and classify things.

I really don't like this trying to falsely equate the context here. How laypeople name things and how scientists name things are not the same context or "nomenclature".

Otherwise all "dinosaurs" are "terrible lizards" and not all dinosaurs are lizards. The nomenclature of how scientists use language is not the same as how laypeople use the same words.

But 'dolphin' isn't a scientific classification, either.  It's from 'delphis', a Greek word which means 'fish with a womb'.  See?  Even the ancient Greeks knew it was a fish. And of the eight groups commonly called 'dolphins', only one is actually in the group called 'delphinidae'.

GO READ THE ORIGINAL POST!

A dolphin is a mammal. The person who made the tweet I posted about denied that dolphins were mammals. THEY ARE MAMMALS! Muddying the waters by treating laypersons usage of the same word a scientist may use causes that kind of bullshit denial.

But scientifically speaking the aquatic mammals we call 'dolphins' aren't dolphins.  'Dolphin' isn't a scientific term.

Besides, you didn't specify which one the tweeter in question was referring to.  There is an animal we call a dolphin that is a fish.  There is another animal we call a dolphin that is a mammal.

BINGO, thank you for proving my point.

Laypeople do not understand the difference between how a scientist uses a word and that muddies up the waters.

"Dolphin" does stem from that word, but when scientists use it, they are talking about mammals, not fish.

Dolphins are mammals who swim in water like fish, but they still do not have gills. They still have lungs. Swimming like a fish does not make it a fish. Whales are not fish either, but in antiquity everything that looked like a fish, gills or lungs everyone falsely thought they were fish. It wasn't until Darwin solidifying classification that distinction was made between mammals and fish.

Remember that the next time you debate a theist arguing over Jonah an the Whale story. How many times have you heard some idiot falsely call the whale a fish? I have plenty of times in 18 years online.
