I've never seen the show, only clips, so my knowledge of Sheldon lore is lacking. 

I'd like to specify a difference between someone who knows facts and someone who thinks about the significance, connections, and wisdom of ideas.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that an autistic person can't be intellectual. 

I just want to distinguish between a person who can calculate the day of the week of any date in history, and a person who takes seriously and spends time on thoughtful ideas -- that kind of thing. 

The Hannibal Lector movies go out of their way to show that he is knowledgable about literature, music, etc. These are things that fascinate through their intellectual and emotional connections. Comic books, Star Wars, etc., are about what's "cool." There is no depth.

I see.  So, when Hannibal Lecter is knowledgeable about literature and music, he's an intellectual.  When Sheldon Cooper does it, he's a comic book geek.

Hannibal Lecter is portrayed in the novel as a socially extremely skilled and adaptable psychopath who fits easily into different societies, effortlessly charms everyone, gains the trust of almost everyone, and deceives and manipulates most people.   He is depicted as not only a murderous cannibal, but also the premier human behavioral psychologist in the world and one of the most respected gourmet cooks  who served up the organs of his victims in memorably delicious dishes to his unsuspecting high society guests.  The entire premise of Silence of the Lambs is although Hannibal was eventually caught and imprisoned after his serial cannibalism was uncovered, his mastery of psychology and behavior was such that the FBI had to come back to his prison cell in the hopes of enlisting his help to profile their most evasive killers.  Hannibal held up his end of the bargain to facilitate catching the killer because his contempt for the psychiatric maladjustment of the criminal, but leverages the opportunity to manipulated his FBI handler into affording him the opportunity to escape.   

In his spare time he is portrayed as having a deep genuine interest in high culture and the fine arts.

He is the antithesis of Sheldor Cooper.

Sheldon cooper is meant for both the non-intellectual and the would be intellectual to feel good about themselves.


Hannibal Lecter seems to be designed to make non-intellectual afraid at night and the intellectual wonder whether he is intellectual enough not to be afraid at night.

I'll never get why some people seem offended by Sheldon Cooper. The very act of pretending he can't possibly be more than a trope created to insult the "genuine" intellectual appears to me a claim to personal intellectualism and therefore superiority over the character. Whatever. I know a handful of bonafide geniuses, and I'm pretty sure they all like comic books.

In short, "He's not smert. I'm smert, and I'm not like him. He's so nerdy and I'm so kewl."

Thank you.  I've read all four of Harris' Lecter novels, (the first two were brilliant, the third and fourth both sucked hard) and I'm well acquainted with the character. I should have made that clear early on, to save you the trouble of lecturing me.

Agreed.  I'm not arguing that Lecter is not an intellectual.

Again, I agree, with the stipulation that Cooper is much, MUCH more than a comic book geek.

I think that's a fair assessment.

That also seems reasonable.

But I think you're comparing apples to oranges. Sheldon Cooper is a comedic character, so the creators would naturally draw him in ORDER to make people feel good about themselves.  Hannibal Lecter is a horror character, made - as you said - by design to make people afraid.

For whatever it's worth, I find Lecter a much more interesting and better developed character than Cooper.  Even though Cooper is clearly a comic book geek, that hardly precludes him from also being an intellectual.  I was simply pointing out that there are more intellectual characters in pop culture than Hannibal Lecter.

I don’t think they find the common name ambiguous. None of us actually do. I also don’t think they’re out to sea on research vessels speaking Latin to each other. Furthermore, the Latin name is usually included next to the common name as a parenthetical in research papers, an afterthought for clarity. It’s not like they all wander around correcting each other when everyone knows what dolphin means, even if it’s more fun to rile Brian than admit it.

Wrong. Many words are regional and Dolphin is one of them. I wasn't kidding when I said it is commonly used to refer to Mahi in the south-eastern United States. I wasn't kidding about "dolphin sandwiches" being on the menu in restaurants all over Florida. I doubt you'll see it anywhere outside the SE but in that region, Dolphin = Mahi.

The point is not whether the use of the word can be ambiguous.    The point is whether the use of the word would be ambiguous in the context of the usage and for the intended audience.

If You don't know how the word "fish" is understood amongst the intended audience, then you have no grounds to assert their use of it therefore most therefore prove stupidity or ignorance.     At most you might accept there are many possible alternative explanation even if you think such usage can possibly be evidence of stupidity or ignorance.
