Patterning Bass ( and the fishing thread)

Patterning Bass ( and the fishing thread)
It’s been a good year. The fam and I have been fishing almost every weekend.

It started out as a way to justify a vacation, and then as a way for the kids ( and my wife) to get closer to daddy, and vv. In the beginning we had the few rods in my gear and a new reel the wife splurged on and got for me. Maybe six or seven hundo in swag, in total.

Now, towards the end of the summer, we’ve got 30 rods and six or seven times the tackle we started out with. The kids are hooked. The wife is hooked even harder. I mostly turned into the guide. I tie a lot of knots and bait hooks....no one else will touch a catfish, yet.

The wife has caught all the bass, she caught every species in cave run on a single trip ( and got a cool prize from fish and game for it). The kids can empty a panfish hole in minutes. I think I might catch one fish to their two dozen overall. I’m still the fams undisputed king of big cats and sharks, thank god, otherwise it would be embarrassing.

It’s been a blast. Is what I’m saying. The kids caught sight of a youth fishing derby one of the times we went out, and decided they wanted to do that. Then they found fishing shows on Netflix and competitions on YouTube. My eldest boy says that’s what he wants to do for a living. So.....I’m using that as an excuse to look into a boat. Boys gotta have a boat to win a trophy. He also needs a good partner.

I grew up poaching, not trophy fishing. I’ve been using the six season guide to pattern. I know very little about bass. Or bass boats. Center console deep v’s are my wheelhouse. I would love to make this thing happen for him though....so I’m looking for advice on baits, patterns, behavior....and boats, for anyone who grew up on bass boats and knows what I should be looking for. Or what I should look out for, seeing as how there’s a kid involved.

Stories, fishing stories, wives tales, the one that got away. Rigs and tricks and tips and affordable alternatives to expensive gear.
Whadda ya got?

I got a pond full of ones I raised -smallmouth - about 4 years old now.

Got a buncha bluegill, crappe and brown bullheads too.

The bass are so well fed that they won' t hardly ever hit a spin bait or even live crawlers....

Fortunately - state law allows me to use ANY method I want - nets, electric shock or explosives - as it's a man made pond not connected to any state waterway - so it's considered aquaculture.....

So what do they hit, when they won’t hit a spinner? You trying to get an anger hit, just pissing them off till they bite?

I was under the impression that spinners were -the- main lake lure this part of the year, even the baitshop guys seemed to think so.

I haven’t had a single bite on a spinner.

Gulf and the eastern seaboard. Pretty much wherever we can afford a ticket for six, lol.

We’re mostly freshwater, though. Takes us about 12 hours to get to saltwater. Go for bulls in the brackish channels inshore, pier fishing the skyway for mackerel and blacktip. Tampa flats for reds, offshore in the gulf for grunts. Surf and offshore on esb for hammerhead, drum, tuna.

The open ocean here is pretty mean. There are sardines. It's a thing over here to put them fresh, with a sprinkle of salt on a bbq, eat them, while sitting on a slice of bread after catching them.

Kayak fishing for tarpon is what I’m going to take the kids down to the gulf for, next.

I wonder if I could infer that in wild populations. Throw a spinner out when they should hit, if they don’t, put a minnow on, go over to crappie?

Sounds like a lot of fun. You going to provide them with SCUBA gear for when they hook one and it runs with them?  Hehe I know dick about fishing, though. I'd use dynamite if I could. When I go "fishing", it's called "drowning bait".
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.
