Ottoman History Essay

So I need help with a annalytic essay on Selim I and I need help understanding fully why Selim battled against the Safevid and the Mamluk Empires.
The question is: Why did Selim I (1512-20) wage war on other Muslim states? Please cover his struggle against the Safevid and the Mamluk Empires. Did he have legitimate reasons to wage wars on other Muslim states?

Sure, he waged wars on Muslim states in the 1500’s because they were softer targets and he needed resources.

Additionally (according to Selim, at least) it was an attempt to stop the spread of Shia Islam into Selim's dominions, which were Sunni. This is a legitimate reason as it 'legitimized' a war for resources.

You're very welcome. If you can work it in somehow, there's a rather charming Mark Twain quote from 'The Innocents Abroad' that may be useful:
'I wish Europe would let Russia annihilate Turkey a little -- not much, but enough to make it difficult to find the place again without a divining-rod or a diving-bell.'
