Evolution of Music from 1400 BC till the present day

It’s kind of awkward that our first foray into folk music in this thread is something so racially dodgy. Perhaps it’s being among the earliest folk songs we can actually have a proper date for has something to do with that. It would have been so nice if we knew enough of the prehistory of the Child Ballads to properly place them on the list.

Oh, well, while writing this post, I remembered I did have some folk song I could properly place here, even if it probably should have been between Bach and Mozart.

Can you elaborate more on the history/context of this song? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to history, and music history in general.

ETA: Oh, I see now. Yeah, no question that history has been shown to be racist. I was watching Gone with the Wind the other day, and boy, I could smell the racism in it (the way they indirectly and shamelessly portrayed the black actors as inferior to the white actors).

Fun fact: a few months ago, I went to see Philippe Quint at Ravinia, playing violin and piano arrangements of music from Charlie Chaplin's films. And as a feat of musical derring-do, Quint decided, just for this concert only, to try to play it in time to this scene from The Great Dictator. Fortunately, he succeeded.

So I just went to a performance of the Monteverdi vesper of 1610, that was pretty intense, and I had a nice seat two rows behind the conductor. The orchestra was made up of renaissance instruments (4x viola da gamba, theorbo, 3 cornetts, renaissance trombones, violins, organ) , and since I'm a sucker for historically informed performance, that was something I enjoyed immensely.
