If your answer is somehow yes... which there's no way it is... then I mean, okay...?

I know how to do some basic things like change my oil or swap my brakes out... I can change a tire, obviously. Simple stuff. But I don't expect every car owner to be an at-home mechanic. People simply don't have the time.

The last job I outsourced - was pumping my septic tank.

I draw the DIY line at "sucking shit".

Afraid to get your hands dirty huh

Really? It seems pretty dumb to me to be totally at the mercy to a mechanic's honesty.

I do virtually all the work on our cars. (We have 9 running) There is only a few things - like wheel alignment or changing tires off rims - that I don't do. (The necessary equipment is too expensive)

But I do know what those jobs take - and know what they should cost.

To me -going to a mechanic with no knowledge of the internal workings of a vehicle - it is sort of like religion. Trusting somebody (who has a profit motive) to handle part of your life and expecting to not get ripped off.

As fine a piece of trolling as I've seen in a long while.
It's amazing 'science' always seems to 'find' whatever it is funded for, and never the oppsite. Drich.

The last truck was amazing. Polished stainless steel tank, clean paint job and shiny chrome.

Not new. I asked.

Just a guy with pride in his business.

Amazing, huh?

Hard to find a business owner that doesn't take pride in what they do. Even if they probably shouldn't, lol.

I've got a soft spot for guys who sling shit for a living. They do more for the world than a doctor but they sure as hell don't get the pay or recognition.

RE: I don't know how they do it.
When we changed oil on the [i]Peleliu[i] we pumped down the main engine lube oil and then 5-8 guys stripped down to their skivvies and climbed into the sump to wipe it down with rags. I have yet to see a oil change place around here attempt that.

BTW, anybody have a grease monkey come up to you with a "sample" of your transmission fluid and a dab of new fluid for a comparison? I've noticed that they never say it needs replacing, but if you go to four different places in a year they'll all try to get you to do this. They don't talk about oxidation or anything like that, they just hope you'll jump to the wrong conclusion.

Do you own a computer and know everything about how it works and maintaining it? It's like that. Some people don't have the time or interest to devote to the topic. For me, I know the basics and a few less basic things, but I send my car to a mechanic because my time is worth more than the money I'd save at the moment. Of course, I wouldn't need a tow if my tire blew, but I don't even do my own oil changes.

When I do the job - it gets done right....i am not in a hurry.

I actually use a torque wrench on lugnuts fer crissakes..... For a reason....

....

Proof - my SO drives a car that I have overhauled and serviced, back and forth to work daily - 42 miles one way - in a 23 year old car, with no problems.

Care to try it?

I use a torque wrench on lug nuts if I have one handy. It's not that rare a habit. It's how I was taught.
