Ike on war...

RE: Ike on war...
I know. Like I said, eyes wide open, lol.

It's not really weird in and of itself though..alot of people react strongly to the anthem (or any other number of things). It's weird, like my patriotism is weird, in light of all the rest of my personality and positions. I'm not the kind of guy people would expect to run around waving flags and rah rah rah - and yet.

Yeah, that;s a good one, I think I may have posted it in the af playlist, lol.

Same, I could take a crack at it, and posit that it has something to do with spending my formative years with grands and greats, participants and children of ww2..and having served myself......but obviously neither of those things has to be true for a person to react that way, and so, it probably wouldn't have to have been true in my case either.

I just accept it without much further thought, like a person would about having brown hair or green eyes or preferring sprite to mountain dew.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I get it.  I am the same way.  Former hippie chick that I am, I have a US flag frame around the license plate on my car.  Maybe it was that couple years I spent in the Army and the years spent as an Army wife and the mother of military brats.

Our present governmental shitshow is not the America I hold dear.

Getting the hell out of the flat spot that kept Lake Michigan out of the Ohio was a good enough reason to join the Navy for me. I had a lot of others but immediacy trumped. (Sorry, didn't mean to use that word.)

A ticket to points unknown. Definitely a good part of their sales pitch. The main reason that people join and stay, beyond our anecdotal stories about ourselves (and this one pretty much can't apply to Ike)...is three meals and a bed. The service is full of poor kids from shit homes. Why wouldn't they join, why wouldn't they stay? Their options are limited. They might not be too in live with the idea of going to war, but they're not exactly strangers to violence coming in.

"Anywhere's better than here." Motivation to get up and get out.

There's a great line from "Drop Dead Gorgeous", the other one. Kirsten Dunst was lamenting the lack of opportunities for females when they finished high school:

Amber Atkins: Oh yeah. Guys get out of Mount Rose all the time on hockey scholarships... or prison.
