No one is saying that overpopulation isn't a problem.  But the real damage to the environment is what we're doing to sustain that population at current consumption levels with current production methods.

And, for what it's worth, I'm a big fan of free birth control.  I had my vasectomy at 19, and have never participated in 'churning out babies', loveable or otherwise.

Actually, no it's not.

Rising standards of living, wealth and education are leveling out population numbers.

Lower infant mortality is having the knock on effect of smaller family sizes.

It depends who you ask...
UN sez almost 12 billion by 2100. No mention at all of stasis. Just slowing of growth.

That isn't an improvement. It' s just a bit less worse.

At the opening ceremony for the Autumn Extinction Rebellion mass action in London this year there was a fellow giving it large on the megaphone about the critical nature of anti-natalism and how everybody should stop breeding. Some environmentalists are "serious" in the way the OP suggests already, then.
