A better question would be why people believe that the human population will grow exponentially (and beyond our ability to sustain it) without some new energy source to fuel that growth.
It's a malthusian conceit, but Malthus was spectacularly wrong even in his own time....so, what gives? Wrong yesterday, right today?

We will expand until we reach a collapse point, then it will be exponential. Perhaps Crazy Eddie will lead the garbagemen in strike for better working condition. |
