Dumb it down for me if you can.

RE: Dumb it down for me if you can.
We actually had this in a class in high school and it was quite fun. It's fairly simple, it takes the "negative image" and projects it on paper, burning in an image into a paper that is revealed by a chemical wash. Polaroids simply did away with the extra step of making a negative and put it straight on the paper.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

I get that. It is basically washing a chemical over the original with paper that reacts to the chemicals. I GET THAT! What I do not get is how you go from one size to a bigger size.

I get it now. Getting it from the camera film is a matter of using a microscope "projector" that burns the image on larger paper that is pre produced to react to chemicals it is dipped in. So the principle is the same. Forcing light on a surface to burn an image into it. It is only a difference between first generation print to second hand print.

I got into black and white photography in high school for one reason...

To spend time in the darkroom with Sue Einen.....

....

The camera holds film. The exposed film is hit with developer, stop bath, fixer and neutralizing wash then hung to dry. This must be in total darkness untill its in fixer.

The developed film (negative) is put in an enlarger - which shoots light through the negatoive and focusing optics onto paper.

The paper is then put in developer, stop bathb fixer and wash - then hung to dry. This can be done under special red lights that allow you to see.

....

I threw my darkroom and film cameras 20 years ago. No market - and getting to pricey for a hobby.

None of the above answers are correct.  If you open a camera, you'll find a tiny demon imprisoned within, equipped with easel, canvas, palette, brushes, etc.

FYI, punch cards are binary. They are a method for storing digital data. Zero or one. On or Off. In the case of the earliest use of punch cards to program machinery, it was in or out. Punch cards were first used to control an automatic loom in the early 18th century. They controlled whether a strand of yarn was pushed forward or pulled back during the weaving process. Digital weaving. Computers that used punch cards work via binary code. Analog computers use voltage or frequency to represent values. The ones I am familiar with didn't use punch cards.
