Horrific Scene in Star Trek: Picard

For my money, the most horrific, terror-inducing, scene in all of television science fiction is this.  WARNING:  Do not look if you've recently eaten:

Haven't (yet) seen this episode - and now don't want to. I thought the death of the first Daj twin in an earlier episode was OTT too - face melied by "acid" etc. The year Star Trek started featuring "pornographic violence" like, say the Saw franchise...FUCK. THAT.

Seriously people it was far from "pornographic violence" and it's far from anything found in the SAW franchise .It was a optical implant being removed .People are seriously overblowing this


Seriously we had an episode of Voyager were a vidian scientist carve a mans face off and grafts it onto his own .But hey that's cool




We watch the whole Romulan sena get vaporized dying a horrible agonizing death  .Totally cool 



All the nightmare fuel from first contact .Awesome.

The fifth episode contained a scene depicting the most horrific thing I've ever seen on television. Star Trek rarely does anything like this but when they do, they don't mess around. Even the original series had some really creepy stuff and there was an episode of The Next Generation (Conspiracy) that featured someone's head exploding. This latest one though, was seriously over the top.

Anyone familiar with Star Trek is familiar with the Borg. Sometimes, Borg drones are separated from the collective and regain their individuality. These individuals may still contain Borg implants in their bodies - very valuable things. The technology is super-advanced so unscrupulous individuals might have no problems with harvesting these implants from former drones for profit.

Imagine somebody using power tools to cut a former drone open - while the person is still alive and conscious. Drill into their skull, pluck out their eye. Vivisection. Well, watch the fifth episode of Picard and you won't have to imagine it.

Is it just me or is this way over the line? I don"t think even an R-rating covers this. Yet it's on TV with no warning at all of graphic scenes.

There's a strange problem with all the Hollywood "gritty reboots" of stuff we liked when we were kids. 

Like I remember watching Batman on TV when I was about 4 years old. It was stupid and comic and the adults could laugh at it and the kids could send away for the kit from the fan club. 

Then I guess we Boomers weren't willing to give up our favorite media crap when we got older, so they had to make Batman and other things progressively more "adult." 

The first Star Trek, with Captain Kirk, was easy political metaphor, dressed up as an action show, aimed at the level of a junior high school kid who's beginning to notice injustice in the world. Think of the profound symbolism of Frank Gorshin white on one side and black on the other, fighting a guy who's reversed. 

But new Star Trek, to keep the attention of its first fans, has to get gritty and "real." When deep down, in its essence, it's for kids. So you've basically got kid shows with torture scenes now. 

I blame my generation, for not growing up properly. You should stop watching kid stuff when you're no longer a kid.

In terms of the breadth of imagination and sophistication of story lines, it's always been at about junior high school level.

In order to make it more "mature" for its aging Boomer audience they introduce more violence.

I think "everyone" is desensitised to violence and gore these days. What has more impact to the psyche of kids these days is the actual story behind the violence.
eg: when a young Anakin goes and kills a bunch of little kids in that outpost in a fit of rage. Sure, we don't see any blood, but that lack of visual graphics didn't horrify me (as an adult) any less at what he did.

The F word is also popping up in the ST universe more and more … Is that OK for kids? Only the parents can decide that.

I guess that depends on what you did at university. If you smoke enough pot, Star Trek will seem deep. But so will Teletubbies.

I hear that most universities are taking on the Neoliberal trend of emphasizing employment skills and eliminating the humanities. If students don't learn how to read texts carefully, they won't be able to see how Star Trek is Neoliberal propaganda for the Military/Industrial Complex, produced by for-profit business to please the corporate sponsors. People might actually think it's for thinking humans.
