"I mean, that just is such a reflection of the craziness that goes on in society," he continued. "The only thing that I have ever done throughout these two years is to encourage people to practice good public health practices, to get vaccinated, to be careful in public settings, to wear a mask. And for that, you have some guy out there saying that people should be giving me a kill shot, to ambush me?"

“Now you go in for the kill shot,” Watters said, suggesting how members in the audience could confront Dr. Fauci and film the encounter. “The kill shot? With an ambush? Deadly. Because he doesn’t see it coming. This is when you say: Dr. Fauci, you funded risky research at a sloppy Chinese lab. The same lab that sprung this pandemic on the world. You know why people don’t trust you, don’t you?”

Watters added that those in the audience should send footage of their confrontation with Dr. Fauci to Fox News. “Just make sure it’s legal,” Watters added.
Fox News defended Watters’ remarks in a statement, saying he was using a metaphor and not calling specifically for violence against the president’s chief medical adviser.

“Based on watching the full clip and reading the entire transcript, it’s more than clear that Jesse Watters was using a metaphor for asking hard-hitting questions to Dr. Fauci about gain-of-function research and his words have been twisted completely out of context,” Fox News said in a statement.

A new study considers why COVID-19 patients on mechanical ventilators have trouble breathing and how refining a common treatment could help save lives.

A thin layer of fluid called pulmonary surfactant lines the air sacs in the lungs, helping to keep the sacs from collapsing at the end of each exhalation. Surfactant was first found to be important in premature babies, who are born without enough surfactant.

The study, published this month in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, shows for the first time that COVID-19 patients on ventilators have less surfactant in their lungs than healthy people.

When researchers treated 10 adult patients with the same artificial surfactant used in preterm babies, the benefit of treatment wore off very quickly and patients needed repeat doses far more often than expected.

The virus that causes COVID-19 infects and kills the lung cells that produce surfactant, but these cells will recover in time once the infection is over, the researchers said. The new findings suggest that in the meantime, "multiple surfactant doses over a number of days will be required ... until the lungs start to make their own surfactant."

Patients with cancer remain vulnerable to breakthrough COVID-19 infection after vaccination and most experience severe outcomes, according to a review of patient data from the international COVID-19 and Cancer Consortium (CCC19) registry.

Of 54 fully vaccinated patients with cancer and COVID-19, 35 (65%) were hospitalized, 10 (19%) were admitted to the intensive care unit or required mechanical ventilation, and 7 (13%) died within 30 days.

Although the study did not assess the rate of breakthrough infection among fully vaccinated patients with cancer, the findings do underscore the need for continued vigilance in protecting this vulnerable patient population by vaccinating close contacts, administering boosters, social distancing, and mask-wearing.
