Large farms, mills (including wood, grains, and cotton), cabinet/furniture shops, and retail stores. A lot of the younger ones get post secondary educations. Mechanics, machinists, welders, even nurses. I've never met a Mennonite doctor, but I'd bet there are a at least a few of them out there.

The farm business model is simple enough. They raise cash crops like corn, wheat, soy beans, and cotton. They use machinery like tractors and powered pumps irrigation so they aren't limited to man/horse power type labor. They produce most of their own fruits and vegetables. They sell the excess in season at their own community markets. They also process a lot of it and sell breads, pastries, canned products, and honey so they have goods available to sell year round. The farms are usually extended family units. They live simply so they are able to save money. When a family unit outgrows a farm they stake some of the younger generation by buying another farm and the process starts again.

Yup... Our stereotyper needs a lesson or two....

These folks vary widely - New Order, Old Order Mennonite.... Some have no electricity. Some have power in the barn for milking machines and welders...
Some have only buggys.and some communally own a van. (We see these frequently)

The husband of my ex-wife's bridesmaid was born into a Mennonite family - but left the community and went to college at WMU. (His dad paid his tuition) He still sports the Abe Lincoln look - and rides a Harley. He still goes home to his family at the holidays. He told us quite a bit about the life. Interesting guy.

Last Mennonites we ran into were in line at a McDonalds. The wives had taken the kids to the play cube and the men were ordering at the next register. When it came time to pay I told Boss Lady "pay up, you've got all the money". The guys looked at me like I'd just stepped off a UFO. We use that line occasionally to this day.

I went to Western Mennonite High School. It is a private school with required Chapel every day. It was a great experience despite being religious because many of the students were from all around the globe. What was creepy were the history lessons about past Mennonites having their guts tacked to a tree and being forced to walk around the tree all while wearing a tongue screw. Various beheadings, and other horrible things. I was religious then so I bought into the import of it all.

You preppers just don't know how to culture war, huh? The amish are poor. This is a fact established by demographic data and a problem that local, state, and federal agencies have studied and made outreach efforts to address.

Whatever value we might place on the self reliance that they allegedly possess - it's not a successful wealth creation strategy. Anecdotal stories about an amish millionaire are just that - anecdotes.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
