I still miss his scathing wit.

“Religion is a totalitarian belief. It is the wish to be a slave. It is the desire that there be an unalterable, unchallengeable, tyrannical authority who can convict you of thought crime while you are asleep, who can subject you to total surveillance around the clock every waking and sleeping minute of your life, before you're born and, even worse and where the real fun begins, after you're dead. A celestial North Korea. Who wants this to be true? Who but a slave desires such a ghastly fate? I've been to North Korea. It has a dead man as its president, Kim Jong-Il is only head of the party and head of the army. He's not head of the state. That office belongs to his deceased father, Kim Il-Sung. It's a necrocracy, a thanatocracy. It's one short of a trinity I might add. The son is the reincarnation of the father. It is the most revolting and utter and absolute and heartless tyranny the human species has ever evolved. But at least you can fucking die and leave North Korea!”
Miserable Bastard.

'Human decency is not derived from religion. It precedes it.'

The only positive from losing this great man so early is that we can now confidently state that there's no afterlife.  If there were, Hitchens would have published an article about it in Vanity Fair by now.

He's not dead, he's engaged in a furious debate with Satan right now. My money is on Hitch.

That's a bet I will not take.

How many other people in the world woyld have had the nerve to go on that bastion of balanced news, Faux Noise, on the death of Jerry Falwell and not only say "if they give him an enema they can bury him in a matchbox", but also state over the hosts' protest that why should he mourn the desth of such a vile man?

Hitch at his best.

Yup, he was a bigot's worst nightmare - an informed man and utterly fearless.

I recall a debate where he handed Bishop Tutu his head because, 'You would condemn my great and good friend Stephen Fry to eternal damnation, not for what he does, but for what he IS. Your religion has made you reprehensible.'

He was a Trump-like figure, indifferent to accuracy or fairness.

He used propaganda to attack, and sometimes those targets deserved to be attacked. But his straw man descriptions and smug presentation made the debate less intelligent, less fair, more polarized, and more self-satisfied.

He made public discourse, and therefore the world, a worse place.

I agree - Jerry Falwell was a complete cunt.
