When a child progresses from writing in single letters to "joined up" letters it is a sign of maturity and progression. A few years ago a politician here in the UK said in a speech that some "joined up" thinking was required on an issue. At the time I thought it was moderately clever. Since then it has become so ubiquitous that as well as "joined up" thinking, people refer to "joined up" actions, driving, football, speaking, or any other noun you care to think of.
