And marry your cousin and then be tormented by the possible implications?

Broad as it’s long.

There are different types of naturalism.

Philosophical naturalism - the claim that the natural is all that exists.

This is a claim that requires demonstration.

Since I do not make the claim, that the natural realm is all that exists, I am not a philosophical naturalist. I am unconvinced that there is anything beyond the natural world, but I do not make that claim with absolute certainty.

Methodological naturalism - the supernatural can not be appealed to when trying to explain the natural world. For good reasons: it's unfalsifiable, correlation does not imply causation, it is basically an argument from ignorance.

This is how the scientific method operates.

I am a methodological naturalist.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Depends on what a theist considers nature or supernatural

Atheism describes people on RELIGION's terms (it owns most of the word, literally)....the only problem I can see with describing myself as a naturalist from here on out is that some people might think I go hang out at the beach butt naked...this could be quite witty though, thinking on, so no bad really! Thoughts?

Getting rid of the quoted bit, because it's a mess in forum code.

Naturalist is a term in science, meaning one who practices in the disciplines of chemistry, astronomy, Earth science, physics or biology. Darwin was one, famously.

Naturalist is also another term for nudist.

Personally, I'll stick to heathen unbeliever.

Unconnected to the thread, are you as big of a fan of the episode your new avatar comes from as I am?

I think the alternate term for nudist is ‘naturist’, not naturalist.

I try not to get all hung up on labels.  If pressed into an answer regarding religion my answer depends on the questioner and situation at hand.  I'm not going to jeopardize a potential employment opportunity or get into a pissing contest with someone but neither am I going to lie.

Various answers for me include:
1)I was raised Catholic (certain flavors of Christians gasp and run for the hills)
2)I am not a person of faith (for some reason that stings less than the "A" word)
3)My father's family is Catholic and my mother's side is Methodist
There are others, I play it by ear but none are untrue.

Honestly - it's no one's damn business.

Pretty sure that the Mormons from the new temple down the street figure I worship Satan based on the Halloween display I usually set up.

Yeah. I won't make that mistake again.

Why did you title this atheist vs naturalist ?

There is no versus. You can be both and I would say most are.
Supernatural is the same as being outside of natural existence.

And we tend to call that. Non-existence.
If supernatural are the set of things that don't exist, then we don't have any reason to worry about them.
