You may despise big game hunting - but it is the only reason that large carnivores are still living in the wild.
You are not trying to feed your family by raising your own goats, sheep and cattle - with hungry carnivores running free - eating YOUR lunch. Farmers in Africa are.
If the lion wasn't worth $10-20 thousand (USD) for a hunter to shoot them - there would be no incentive for anyone to protect them (nor would there be funding)
The farmers would have shot them into extinction long ago.

If they had mottled skin and scales - and were ugly as hell -you'd be out there whacking them too...
