I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

For about 100 years, the practice of grave opening (not grave robbing) was common in Europe. People would open graves and remove symbolic or sentimental items - generally brooches and swords - and leave behind valuable items of gold or silver.

(Not nearly as cool as the dildo story. Sorry.)

RE: The Archaeology Thread
That probably wasn't it's primary purpose...but it's hard to believe that no one gave it their best effort. Same with the matron figurines, or the internet.

There were objects like that with a primary purpose to fit, entire statues and temple complexes (or so we've been told by the narrators of history that this was their purpose)....but that comes a fair bit later. One of the things that's always struck me as great about the confluence of sex and the sacred, ny worldview in which the notion of sexual magic by any description is effective, is that praying for rain in those cultures must have been fun - a gratifying experience even if it didn't end up raining. That's just a reason to wake up and do it harder longer the next day. You can see how human beings might lose themselves down a spiral of wanton fucking for effect for thousands of years. At some point in the not too distant past, it's almost as if people started poking their heads up and say..hey, the endless orgy has been great, but at some point we're going to have to fix the roof, it's been leaking this entire time..because, in pretty swift order, overt sexual cults are entirely swept off the cultural map. The people who'd been doing it, for tens of thousands of years (most likely)...even they decided it was time to try something else.

-and humanity has suffered for it ever since, ask the bonobos. Wink

Uratu Castle Discovered In Turkey

Quote:Located among the mountains of the Gürpinar district of eastern Van province, the castle sits at an altitude of 8,200 feet. There, the team found ancient walls, a cistern for water storage, and, further within the grounds, some ceramic fragments. Though the structure is not intact, piled stones provide outlines of former foundations and walls.

Stone Carving Discovered Near Hadrian’s Wall

Quote:Site archaeologist Marta Alberti commented: “The nakedness of the man means he is probably a god, rather than a mere cavalryman, he is also carrying a spear in his left arm, a common attribute of the god of War – Mars, however when you look at his head, the two almost circular features could be identified as wings: a common attribute of Mercury – god of travel. Horses and donkeys are also often associated with Mercury as a protector of travellers”.
