‘Free’ in this context can usually be taken to mean ‘no cost to the user at point-of-service’.

There’re plenty of things the US could do to lower the cost of healthcare to the point where where universal healthcare becomes practical and no (or only minor) tax increase would be needed.

I know this because literally every other developed country in the world has managed to do it.

I wouldn’t go that far, but it does puzzle me that the sentiment ‘I don’t want to pay for someone else’s healthcare’ is often couple with ‘goddam insurance company only pays 80% of my medical bills’.

I read once that the average cost to the patient for an ambulance ride in the US is $US1200.

Here, the maximum is $88.00 (about $US60).

I had a virtual appt. with my doctor a couple weeks ago. It became virtual because of an ice storm and their office being closed. I already knew what was wrong and what needed to happen. A 10 minute facetime call cost me $83.20. And that's a discount from going to their office which would have been closer to 120.00. Yeah, I think about if I can afford to see a doctor all the time.

(most people pay a fee to collect their prescriptions, but if you need things on a regular basis you can pay a one off annual fee, no charge for over 65 year olds or those with some long term illneses like diabetes)

On my husbands insurance plan at work, most of our prescriptions are zero cost.  But when you consider the cost of an office visit to get the prescription, the 'savings' isn't all that impressive.  They find a way to get the money out of you one way or another.
