Plain Jane Car Decal

I've chosen what I think is a Sopwith Camel biplane that will sit next to Jane Porter on the car. Is it important to paint those blue and red targets on the wing and side? Like, it'll look like a biplane if I just paint the wings and body straight colors, yeah? I just want to make sure it'll be identifiable as a "that's a plane, yup" without making it too complicated or specific. I haven't ever looked at any planes for the purpose of painting them before, so, I never noticed the circular patterns they all seem to have on the wings and bodies. Are those important? Or are they brand identifying marks?

Might as well stick with cartoons.

And yes, the markings are important.

Thanks, @brewer. I can paint the real version. I just wanted to make sure how much paint I needed to use. Shit. I didn't buy blue or red.

The " bullseye" is called a roundell.... Those are approptiate as that color (colour) scheme was in use for the Brits in WW1. There were other variations.

Thanks, olb for the info. It does seem appropriate for the theme on that side of the car.

The markings are military in use to denote the country of origin of the aeroplane. The roundel (circular marking) appears to be a WW1 era British one, for the US equivalent the colours (outside in) would be red, blue, white; with the blue much brighter.

Day five. Five hours worked.

I finished the wood plane next to Jane Jetson.

This is one of those times where I don't really see it until I'm done and taking pictures of it. Looking at it at the start today, I know it doesn't look right. The wood grain is very bold and it makes it look flat for all the texture it provides. But it's not about thinking it through. It's about zooming in my focus on the reference photo and releasing control. It's second nature to me now.

I'm not even "painting" anymore. Music blasting in the garage, I'm alone and lost in a fanfiction fantasy about Oz(I'm rewatching it right now). I remember small bits and pieces of the painting process. I made different color washes with the turpentine to add the gloss look of the wood handles. I remember putting the black inner frame in. And mixing several different shades and tones of yellow and white-yellow just for the gold inlaid holes. But that was nearer the end when I was starting to fade with fatigue. The rest is kind of a blur, my body on autopilot.

I also finished Jane Porter today. I'm not happy with her eyes. I think I made her face too narrow or something. Disney gals always have weird paired eyes when you draw them in this semi-sideways look. I didn't have blue so...her eyes are purple. But I think I'll go ahead and order it because I need it for the biplane.

Wasn't there some actress who had "violet" irises? I'm famous for saying the wrong actor's name, so I'll abstain from naming her.

I just got the "plane/plain jane". You and your pops are pretty deadpan.

And apparently I'm pretty slow. Doh
