How high have you ever been?

RE: How high have you ever been?
Of all the places I've gone:
  • New York and Washington DC are at sea level (or above it by a couple feet)
  • Chicago and Nashville are both at 597 feet
  • Springfield, IL is slightly lower (558 feet)
  • Door County, Wisconsin has an average elevation of 758 feet.
  • The Las Vegas Strip, however, takes the cake, at about 2,000 feet above sea level.

Damfino. I was just gravitating generally eastward to Waukegan, IL. I drove "south" and stayed the night in Colorado Springs, as I recall. Then went east through Kansas. This was in March, '73. Maybe that helps tell you where I was?

If you were headed east into Denver, it was likely the Eisenhower tunnel that was closed. Seeing that the north bore opened on March 8th of 1973 and was frequently shut down during the early months of it's operation, that seems likely. US 6 over Loveland pass is the original route through the Rockies in that area. If it was Loveland pass, you can credit yourself with almost 12,000 feet (officially 11,992). Still shy of me at 14,271 though. Pike's Peak is more famous, but Mt Evans is where it's at if you want to get high in the Rockies without the mountaineering gear.

I take no credit when credit is not due. Big Grin I dropped down to Colorado Springs to head further east. Ate breakfast in Salina, Kansas. One thing I'll take credit for is passing 3 Kansas State troopers on whatever that highway was. I had a Hugger Orange '69 Camaro with a 327 and a four speed, and drove it like a madman.  Tut Tut I was on that road doing 90+ MPH when I came up on the first trooper. As I was from California and all the California Highway Patrol cars were black and white in those days, I didn't recognize the KSP, which had light green over dark green paint jobs. I looked at the trooper, he looked at me, but didn't pull me over and cite me. Maybe because I was wearing a Sailor Suit. I passed 2 more of them before I got out of Kansas. Hehe IIRC, I crossed Kansas in about 4 hours. I had dinner in St Louis, and finally ended up in Lincoln, IL for the night. That was a buncha driving. I also remember feeling some loss of traction in that bridge in St Louis, and the car getting squirrely. Lucky to be alive, sliding on frozen bridges at stupid speeds.
