It actually makes a weird kind of sense - once you decided that your particular church is the sole arbiter of what constitutes ‘error’, you (and only you) get to determine if you’ve erred.

I don’t disagree, not even a little bit. BUT…you and I (and billions of others) are well outside the Roman Church. Of course the Church can claim it has never erred, just as Muslims claim the Quran is perfect and Mormons claim that Joseph Smith had a magical hat.
