teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

"In glades they meet skull after skull
Where pinecones lay - the rusted gun,
Green shoes filled with bones, the mouldering coat
And cuddled up skeleton;
And scores of such. Some start as in dreams,
And comrades lost bemoan:
By the edge of these wilds Stonewall had charged,
But the year and the man were gone."

(Herman Melville, The Armies of the Wilderness)

I picked up a book of hers once, way back when I was a teenager, and I only made it a few pages before closing the book. Never ventured an attempt to read her stuff again.
