Clarinets are the answer.   Heart  Seriously.
  • They require concentrated effort and lots of muscle memory just to master the bizarre fingering system (for example, you have to use four different fingerings to play an "E" in four different octaves, as opposed to just pressing the octave key on a saxophone).
  • They're good for cardiovascular fitness.
  • They're eminently portable, unless you have a full-sized contrabass clarinet (in which case a bar stool should be part of your gear, so that you can reach the mouthpiece).
  • They sound cool.
  • And they will never threaten to send you to hell, although I've spent many years in Reed Purgatory.
